Rodney E. Smith

Rodney E. Smith, 740 Marland Dr., died at his home Thursday evening, Oct. 8, 1992. He was 76. Born June 11, 1916, in Turon, Kan., he was the son of Lester L. and Helen Genevieve (Elder) Smith.
After graduation from Protection (Kansas) High School in 1934 he served as an apprentice typesetter on the local newspaper and then worked as a linotpye operator at newspapers in Emporia, Kan., and Warrensburg, Mo. From 1942 to 1945 Smith served in the U. S. Army.
On June 17, 1945, he married Billy Lou Pate at Cedar Vale, Kan. where they made their first home and Smith operated a Mobil Service Station. In 1950 the family moved to Ponca City where Smith was employed at the Conoco Refinery for 28 years.
Smith was a member of the Hartford Avenue Church of Christ. His hobbies were fishing and gardening.
Survivors include his wife, Billy, of the home; one daughter, Carol Iraggi of Ponca City; one brother, Maurice Smith of Tulsa; two sisters, Maxine Miller of Riverside, Calif., and Norma Lohman of Elgin, Kan.; and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, in the Hartford Avenue Church of Christ with Mr. Carl Maples officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in the Cedar Vale (Kansas) Cemetery under the direction of Trout Funeral Home of Ponca City.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 a.m. Monday. The casket will not be opened after the service. Casket bearers will be Jack Boren, James Key, Jim Kinney, Glen Riley, Del Rowe and Joe Smock. Honorary casket bearers will be Kent Allen, Howard Hulsey, Clarence Logan, George McPherson, Louis Riebe, George Underwood and Jake McNiece.
Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Smith's name to Oklahoma Cancer Research, 825 Northeast Thirteenth, Oklahoma City, OK 73104. The family will be at the home, 740 Martland Drive. They will receive friends at Trout Funeral Home from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., Sunday.
